Reproductive Justice 401: Refresh Roe

In 1973, Roe v Wade was a landmark case that provided federal privacy protections for medical decisions, a precedent that was upheld throughout the last 50 years in cases such as Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey and Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, among others. Abortion access is at the forefront of a national conversation, with the debate about Roe right at the center. The terrifying reality of a post-Dobbs world has many calling to “Restore Roe”. However, long before Dobbs and the fall of Roe, it was clear to abortion advocates that Roe did not protect from or account for restrictions and systemic lack of access to abortion healthcare.
